Overview - Selayang Pandang
Reba is a traditional ceremony that aims to do homage and words of gratitude to the service of the ancestors. This ceremony is also used to evaluate everything about the life of the society in previous years already served by public Ngada. Through this ceremony, family and community asking for directions to the religious and traditional leaders to be able to live better in the new year. The ceremony is held every new year, precisely in January or February.
Host for the ceremony is always rotating in each year. A day before the celebration of Reba starts, held the opening ceremony of Reba (su'i uwi). On the night of the event su'i uwi done eating and drinking together (ka maki Reba) while waiting for morning. In the morning, when the ceremony, guests are provided food and beverages that are ripe and ready to eat (Ngeta kau bhagi ngia, mami utu Mogo. Kaa si papa vara, ini su papaPinu). The main dish in this feast is sweet. For citizens Ngada, sweet heralded as a food source that never runs out is provided by the earth. Therefore, residents Ngada will never experience food insecurity or malnutrition.

Reba merupakan upacara adat yang bertujuan untuk melakukan penghormatan dan ucapan rasa terima kasih terhadap jasa para leluhur. Upacara ini juga digunakan untuk mengevaluasi segala hal tentang kehidupan bermasyarakat pada tahun sebelumnya yang telah dijalani oleh masyarakat Ngada. Melalui upacara ini, keluarga dan masyarakat meminta petunjuk kepada tokoh agama dan tokoh adat untuk dapat menjalani hidup lebih baik pada tahun yang baru. Upacara ini diadakan setiap tahun baru, tepatnya di bulan Januari atau Februari.
Tuan Rumah untuk upacara ini selalu bergiliran pada setiap tahunnya. Sehari sebelum perayaan Reba dimulai, dilaksanakan upacara pembukaan Reba (su'i uwi). Pada malam su'i uwi dilakukan acara makan minum bersama (ka maki Reba) sambil menunggu pagi. Pada pagi harinya, ketika upacara berlangsung, para tamu disediakan makanan dan minuman yang sudah matang dan siap dimakan (Ngeta kau bhagi ngia, mami utu mogo. Kaa si papa vara, ini su papa pinu). Hidangan utama dalam pesta ini adalah ubi. Bagi warga Ngada, ubi diagungkan sebagai sumber makanan yang tak pernah habis disediakan oleh bumi. Karena itu, warga Ngada tidak akan pernah mengalami rawan pangan ataupun busung lapar.
Selama upacara Reba berlangsung diiringi oleh tarian para penari yang menggenggam pedang panjang (sau) dan tongkat warna-warni yang pada bagian ujungnya dihiasi dengan bulu kambing berwarna putih (tuba). Sebagai pengiring tarian adat adalah alat musik gesek berdawai tunggal yang terbuat dari tempurung kelapa atau juga dari labu hutan. Sebagai wadah resonansinya, alat musik ini ditutupi dengan kulit kambing yang pada bagian tengahnya telah dilubangi. Sedangkan penggeseknya terbuat dari sebilah bambu yang telah diikat dengan benang tenun yang telah digosok dengan lilin.

Upacara adat Reba biasa dilakukan tiga sampai empat hari. Sebelum pelaksanaan upacara tari-tarian dan nyanyian (O Uwi) diadakan misa inkulturasi di gereja yang dipimpin oleh seorang imam katolik (pater atau romo). Beberapa rangkaian upacara juga diiringi dengan koor nyanyian gereja, dan menggunakan bahasa lokal Ngada. Upacara ini memang memadukan unsur adat dengan agama.
Di luar gereja, suasana upacara adat bertambah meriah, ketika para penonton dan penari disodori satu atau dua gelas arak (tua ara). Ini merupakan tradisi setiap orang Ngada yang hadir dalam upacara tersebut. Namun demikian, Reba bukan sekedar pesta hura-hura, tetapi wujud kegembiraan (gaja gora) masyarakat Ngada dengan tetap menjaga nuansa rohani.
